ESS welcomes Brigadier Richard Brown to Hull

On Tuesday 27th June, we welcomed Brigadier Richard Brown and colleagues from the DIO to ESS Hull, to view our Single Living Accommodation (SLA) modular prototype product, designed to improve living conditions, comfort and functionality, now ready for user testing by service personnel.

Darren Walker, SLA Sector Lead at ESS Modular, said:

We are proud to be a part of Army’s Single Living Accommodation (SLA) Programme and helping deliver this priority programme for the DIO. Reaching this milestone of our journey with the Army SLA is the culmination of an intensive period of collaborative engagement with many levels of the customer organisation.

Alongside developing an SLA product with the DIO team and Technical Services Provider Arcadis that achieves Net Zero Carbon and is completely manufactured off-site using the best examples of Modern Methods of Construction, we are looking forward to welcoming serving Army personnel from each project site to our Hull production facility to undertake user testing of a fully complete prototype.

As manufacture gets underway, the invaluable feedback gathered by this engagement is helping ensure we provide an innovative new generation of modular living accommodation which will support the wellbeing and comfort of our military personnel, while making a major contribution to the sustainable modernisation of the UK’s Defence estate.”

Under its Single Living Accommodation Programme, the Army is investing £1.2Bn in new bedspaces over 10 years and ESS have secured programmes of work at Weeton, Kendrew and Wattisham Barracks, providing 363 bedspaces in Single Living Accommodation to service personnel.  Production of the first SLA modules for Weeton Barracks is set to commence in August 2023, with site installation scheduled for November 2023.
